“Eric, look,” Charlie said half an hour later as they saw activity ahead of them. A house surrounded by police. Charlie pulled up alongside. Before the truck stopped, Eric jumped out, running to the scene.

“Detective Stiles,” someone called and he raced toward the uniformed officer.

“Tell me you know where they went…”

“No.”

Eric’s heart dropped into his stomach.

“But we’re pretty sure they were here.”

“Why?” Charlie asked, joining them.

“We found this,” he handed Eric a small plastic bag containing a piece of fabric wrapped in several strands of deep red hair.

“Where?”

“The basement,” he motioned inside before nodding that it was okay for him to go in.

Eric stepped through the front door, feeling Charlie behind him. He took a breath, following the hallway to the back of the house. A few random officers milled about as he passed. They came to a heavy wooden door. It was cracked open and Eric pushed it aside. It wailed in protest and he stepped into the darkness.

The stairs creaked with each step he took into the dimness below. The humid musty area was cold and damp. He swallowed hard. Gray concrete, unfinished jagged walls and dust surrounded them and a chill raked up his spine.

“We found it over there,” the same officer descended the stairs behind them. The beam of his flashlight landed to the right of where they stood.

Eric reached for a flashlight and his gaze landed on Charlie who scanned the room. An officer offered his and Eric stepped toward the area. His hand brushed against the cold concrete, but his mind still refused to accept it.

Not here…not like this…

Eric’s gaze fell on a spatter of blood and his chest flooded with an unrecognized pain.

She was here.

Unable to push the image away, he could see her trapped in the dismal space of the basement. All the air left the room and his entire body clenched at the suffocation. He ascended the stairs into the sunlight. His lungs took in the stale air. He fought for control. He mindlessly entered one of the side rooms, feeling himself begin to unhinge.

They didn’t find her, which means she’s still…

Keep it together, Stiles…falling apart isn’t going to help anyone.

The sewn seam around his emotions threatened to tear and he couldn’t move. Paralyzing agony spiked from the core of his body and he fought back in vain. He knew it wouldn’t stop until she was in his arms, safe.

“Eric, what’s going on?”

Eric shifted, wiping an unexpected wetness from his eyes. He leaned against the wall, facing his brother, pure disbelief staring back at him. It had become apparent that he’d changed into something his brother didn’t recognize.

“I’ve never seen you like this.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah, you never…”

“Yeah well, things change.”

Eric exited the room and pushed through the front door, hearing Charlie just behind him.

“Since when?”

“You still don’t get it, do you?”

“What are you talking about?”

“Have you really convinced yourself that all of this…what happened, was just some kind of joke?” Eric turned to face Charlie. “That Rebecca and I lied and hid our feelings from you because we thought it was fun?

“I don’t know what the hell you meant to do, and to be honest, I don’t really care.”

“Charlie…whether or not you choose to believe Rebecca and I didn’t expect to get involved,  we tried to walk away from our feelings but we couldn’t.” Charlie’s eyes diverted in anger, “Jesus Charlie, she went through hell and all she could think about was how she couldn’t hurt you!”

“So once again this is my fault!”

“No…I am just…” Eric tried to keep his emotions in check. “As your brother, your friend, I tried to forget about…everything. But that night, that first night in Dallas, everything changed. Rebecca and I did everything we could to ignore it, make the feelings disappear but they didn’t. They only got stronger…can you try to understand that?”

“You really expect me to—”

“I expect you to believe that I tried! I expect you to realize that what happed between Rebecca and I had nothing to do with you. To remember that until that moment, I’ve never betrayed you.”

“So because you’ve always tried to be the good big brother you want me to be okay with this? To just accept you stealing the woman I love away from me, and move on?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re my brother and I need you to.” Eric’s eyes watered despite his continued battle against it. “Charlie, I’m in love with her.”

“I loved her, too!”

“Okay, Charlie,” Eric clenched his jaw. “Where did you see things heading with her? Let’s say we never met what then?”

“I don’t know. I never got the chance, thanks to you!”

“That’s the difference!” Eric pushed back. “Six weeks ago, and the two months before that, hell even in Dallas, I knew this was different. I knew she changed everything. Even when she left without a word and I didn’t even know her name, I couldn’t get her out of my head! I look at her and see everything I never knew I wanted. She’s woken up this person inside me that I didn’t even know was there! TI have become this person who wants a house and a family, who needs to see her every morning and hold her every night, because when I don’t, something is missing and the world doesn’t make sense. “

“Eric–”

“The difference is that the moment I met her, she became my whole world,” he struggled to keep his furious heart under control. “I know that you loved her. That was one of the reasons I stayed away as long as I did. It might not seem like much, but…she needed me and I couldn’t turn my back anymore. Now she’s gone and I can’t…If we don’t…if I can’t find her…”

“We’re going to find her, Eric.”

Wow!! Is all I can say, Jaded Promises is a fantastic ending to the trust series. It is filled with mystery, murder, family, trust, luscious sex and lies and keeps you gripping your seat to the very end. It’s filled with twists and turns you would never have imagined and keeps you guessing the whole time. I was blown away by the revelations that became about. Gob smacked I might say you would call it!! I was kept intrigued throughout the entire story, rapt and drawn into this whirlwind of events. The twists and turns I never expected, the suspense almost killed me… I was taken aback by the dramatic disclosure and events that became about – thinking oh my gosh!!!! NO !!!! I did not expect this- I enjoyed this book not being predictable as it defiantly was not!
I was still mesmerized by the love in which Eric and Rebecca still held onto through all there dilemmas. The love was sensual, lustful and magical. The sex was hot yet classy and their feelings well described. They went to the end of the earth and back and love still conquered and found its way!!
Eric ** heart throb** was definitely my ideal knight in shining amour, always there for Becca , the emotions realistic as in every day life. I found the emotions realistic and very genuine… I enjoyed the way in which Amy showed the feelings, it was like poetry.
Rebecca’s character I enjoyed she had her moments but still stuck to her kick arse red head attitude ** FIREY AND STRAIGHT FORWARD AND INDEPENDANT ** I enjoyed her tough exterior immensely but also liked the fact that she was only human and had her moments, very real and emotional, I felt I was there at certain parts, I was feeling torn with her. One can only take so much -This being Realistic in everyday life once again.
Overall the storyline was fluent, face paced, and smooth, the dialogue flowing and the storyline consistent and never lacking a dull moment. I could just not put the book down! New characters were introduced and past books and information all flowed from book one through to book 3. Mild sex scenes very beautiful and sensual – the sex does not overtake the storyline, just gives it that little bit of excitement very sensual and thrilling.
Overall a powerful thriller with that lush and sensual romance entwined……
I am sad to see this series end but I did not feel the story was left hanging Amy ended it with everything concluded and not that feeling that you thought something was missing.
